Petwise Blog: Hedgehogs: The Quirky Speedsters and Their Spiky Secrets

A celebrity of this species… the most legendary, spiky speedster of them all, their blue cousin, if you will, runs over hills and rollercoaster tracks to collect rings and evade evil. Sonic the Hedgehog, of course!

The world is currently inhabited by 17 different species of hedgehogs, and the popular, fascinating, inquisitive companion pets are African Pygmy Hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs like to be alone. It’s extremely rare to see a group of hedgehogs together in the wild, but there are a couple of words for it: a prickle or an array of hedgehogs! 😆

They’ll roll into a ball at the sight of danger or when there isn’t time to scurry away. They can actually reach up to 6.4 km/hr and have around 6000 quills on their body, quite the backpack of spikes! Our baby hedgehogs at Petland are all really tame, socialized, and relaxed.

They’re classified as omnivores and eat premium kibble, insects, and some eggs, fruits, and vegetables. They used to be called urchins, which led to the naming of sea urchins.

Besides their sharp armor, hedgehogs have another trick to give them extra protection… Self Anointing!

It’s quite clever: hedgehogs will eat certain poisonous plants that they’re immune to and make a frothy saliva in their mouth. Then they’ll lick their spines, spreading the plant’s poison all over their spikes. This helps the hedgehog to hide its scent from predators and gives the quills an added defense against danger.
