Kent State, Kennesaw State among schools taking part in inaugural Western Slam event in Lethbridge

The four NCAA Division One basketball teams competing in the inaugural Western Slam event in November have been announced.

From November 27th to 30th the Kennesaw State Owls, Towson University Tigers, U C Irvine Anteaters and Kent State Golden Flashes will compete in the event. Each team will play three of the six games that will take place at the ENMAX Centre.

According to the tournament’s tentative schedule Kennesaw will face U C Irvine and Towson will take on Kent State on Thursday, Kennesaw will face Towson and Kent State will play U C Irvine on Thursday; the two Saturday games include Kennesaw against Kent State and Towson against U C Irvine.

Back in November when the event was announced Tournament Director Jeff Dunlap explained that the Western event came on the heels of a successful Atlantic Slam in Moncton, New Brunswick. When they were looking for the home of the Western Canada event, they kept hearing about the Alberta basketball frenzy.

“We are going to look at slightly smaller markets that really embrace it, take it and run with it. More so a Vancouver would, or a Montreal, you get into some of those big cities that have so much stuff going on, not sure how popular we’d be. But to Moncton, Canada, they are thrilled, and to Lethbridge, we are hoping on you guys being thrilled,” Dunlap says.

ENMAX Centre Acting General Manager Jennifer Norsworthy says organizers are optimistic to see the turn out to the upcoming Western Slam.
