Petwise Minute: Exploring the Musical Lives of Birds

From the intricate songs they sing and the sounds they mimic, to dancing along to the beat and bobbing their heads to their favorite tunes… birds are musical! And they enjoy it!

Birds have their own complex songs, which they use to communicate with one another, impress a mate with their talent, and sometimes imitate other bird species for an advantage.

Studies reveal that birds’ brains are affected by music in a similar way to ours. Both bird songs and human music elicit responses not only in brain regions associated with reward but also with emotion.

Birds can have preferences for the type of music they enjoy, responding to the various beats, harmonies, vocal arrangements, and other musical elements. These responses can lead to behaviors in birds that are quite relatable to our own!

Additionally, studies have shown that birds are hardwired to prefer specific frequencies and tempos of music. However, one type of music most birds don’t enjoy is electronic dance music.

Experts suggest that birds, being highly social creatures, enjoy music and are moved to dance and sing along in ways that are remarkably similar to humans.
