Movember helps raise funds and awareness about men’s health

Grow a Mo, Save a Bro – help raise funds with Movember during the month of November and raise awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health. Remember, you don’t have to Mo It Alone.

Attention all Mo Bros and Mo Sisters! Here’s how to Mo in four easy steps. Grow a Mo, Move for Mental Health, Host a Mo-ment or Mo Your Own Way.

Senior Manager of Development at Movember Canada Evan Connor says Movember is the world’s largest men’s health charity. “It’s a 30-day campaign aimed at raising funds and awareness.”

“We’ve been quite fortunate in our 18 years of having Movember in Canada to get incredible support from Albertans,” notes Connor.

One of the ways Movember gives back is through programs and the Oil Rig Rumble initiative that engages the energy sector, which is rooted out of Alberta.

“It’s an opportunity to unite the industry in a fun campaign, but certainly one that’s intended to spark a dialogue. Particularly when it comes to chatting about mental health and making sure men understand it’s OK to not to be OK. And having open and constructive conversations go a long way in bettering the outcome for the men in Alberta, across Canada and around the world,” Connor explains.

According to Connor, the Oil Rig Rumble is heading into its third year and it has really evolved. “Last year, we had 80 companies involved and we raised just over a million dollars, which is quite phenomenal. The most impactful thing is we’re seeing a lot of engagement in the major cities, including Calgary and Edmonton, which is fantastic. But we’re able to get into the fields more and leverage the campaign.”

There’s already over 150 teams registered for this year’s Oil Rig Rumble.

On an individual level, southern Albertans can grow a moustache. “But it’s important to acknowledge not everyone wants to or can grow a moustache. You can move for Movember. We encourage people to move 60 kilometres throughout the month for the 60 men we lose to suicide every hour. You can host an event. In the workplace or Mo Your Own Way,” notes Connor. “Where you can get involved with whatever your passionate about and use it as an opportunity to raise a bit of funds, but more importantly use it as a chance to share some men’s health information.”

On a group level, there’s nothing like people growing moustaches in an office or getting moving together as a group, says Connor.

Women can also get involved by moving for Movember or by hosting an event to support the campaign.

“Men’s health affects all of us. Healthy men will lead to healthy communities and will lead to healthy workplaces and healthy households, so encouraging the men in their life,” says Connor.

A lot of the top companies involved with Movember are led by Mo Sisters that really lead the way.

“Make the campaign your own, connect it and share why you’re doing Movember,” adds Connor.
