City looking for youth group for Christmas tree collection program

Even though the thought of tearing down Christmas trees is still weeks away, the City of Lethbridge is looking for community youth groups wanting to fundraise by helping with tree collection.

The city’s Waste and Environment Department has offered the Christmas Tree Recycling Program for over 25 years and this year the youth group that is chosen to help pick up trees from around the city will receive a $10,000 honorarium.

The volunteer youth organization will collect these trees and take them to drop-off locations around the city, for parks staff to then turn them into woodchips that will be used in the city’s parks in the future. A second collection will be done to pick up missed trees.

For groups to be considered for the tree collection program, they will need to submit a description of their interest in taking part and the resources they have to help with the program. City staff will review the submissions and pick a group. Smaller youth organizations are encouraged to come together under one group banner with a single submission.

Saturday, January 11th is this year’s tree collection date and those wanting their trees to be picked up will need to put it out in the usual waste collection location.
