This past weekend, Pronghorn Athletics hosted a special dinner to celebrate the 2023-24 U Sports Academic All-Canadians, a distinguished group of 52 student-athletes who have excelled both in their sports and academics.
These student-athletes, who have maintained a GPA of 80 per cent or higher, while competing at the highest levels of university sport, were honoured for their exceptional dedication and achievement.
This year’s class of Academic All-Canadians is especially notable, as it represents nearly 40 per cent of the varsity student-athletes at the University of Lethbridge.
“These athletes have demonstrated a level of commitment and discipline that goes beyond the playing field, balancing the demands of varsity athletics with exceptional academic performance. To maintain an 80 per cent average, while competing at the highest level of university sport is no small feat and these student-athletes truly embody the values of hard work, perseverance and excellence,” says Spencer Pommells, athletic director.
In addition to the recognition, Pronghorn Athletics announced the recipients of the Deb Steacy Academic All-Canadian Scholarship Fund, which will award $15,000 in scholarships to this year’s honourees. Named in memory of Deb Steacy, the fund helps support the educational journeys of these exceptional athletes.
Since the Academic All-Canadian program’s inception in 1990, over 1,480 Pronghorn student-athletes have earned this prestigious distinction.
