The RCMP was kept busy on the roads last week as thousands of tickets were handed out to Alberta drivers during National Safe Driving Week.
From December 1 to 7, the Alberta RCMP teamed up with other policing agencies across Canada to promote road safety. In that time, Mounties in Alberta issued 1,933 tickets.
Of those, 18 were for careless driving, 18 for distracted driving and 642 were for speeding.
The RCMP notes one ticket was handed to a driver reportedly driving 80 km/hr over the posted speed limit.
DRIVING IMPAIRED
Throughout the week, the Alberta RCMP issued 159 Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) for impaired driving, with 54 impaired drivers taken off roads on December 7 alone, which marked National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day. That day, officers worked with provincial partners to set up check stops for mandatory alcohol screenings.
“December is a time for celebration,” says Sgt. Darin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic.
“Many Albertans will be traveling across the province to see their friends and families. No matter what your holiday plans are, always be mindful of traffic safety. Saving a few minutes is not worth the risk.”
The RCMP is reminding drivers that road safety is the responsibility of everyone, and it is never safe to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
