Watch your speed: New playground zones coming to Lethbridge next month

New playground zones are being added to Lethbridge in the new year.

Starting in mid-January 2025, 42 of these zones will be added for Lethbridge Police Service monitoring by photo radar to help reduce speeding and prevent crashes.

In December 2019, the provincial government barred municipalities from adding any new photo radar sites. That ban was lifted earlier this month when the province announced changes to the current automated traffic enforcement program.

Under the announced guidelines, automated traffic enforcement is restricted to playground zones, school zones and construction zones. Monitoring has been banned on provincial highways, and the government is restricting the use of intersection safety device cameras to only enforce red light violations.

Right after this was announced, the LPS took away 27 sites that were no longer compliant under the new guidelines.

Monitoring in the new locations, all harmonized playground zones in Lethbridge, will start on January 13. Playground zones are in place daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The new locations (playground zones) for monitoring are listed below.
