16-year-old receives 30-day licence suspension following New Year’s Day collision

A 16-year-old has had their driver’s license suspended for 30 days after testing positive for alcohol following a collision in Taber on New Year’s Day.

On Wednesday, around 9:30 p.m., members of the Taber Police Service and Taber Emergency Services responded to a collision at 52nd Avenue and 57th Street.

According to police, following the initial investigation, one vehicle was driving southbound on 57th Street and was allegedly struck by an eastbound travelling vehicle when entering the 52nd Avenue intersection. In a statement, Taber Police officials say, “The intersection is controlled by a yield sign for east and westbound traffic on 52 Avenue.”

The 16-year-old driver of the eastbound vehicle’s roadside breath sample had alcohol detected, this leads to the Bow Island teen receiving Immediate Roadside Sanctions, because GDL drivers have a zero tolerance policy. This includes a 30-day licence suspension, a seven-day vehicle seizure and a $240 administrative fee. The teen also was issued a ticket for failing to obey a yield sign.
