Petwise Minute: Scorpions II – Ancient Survivors of the Natural World

Scorpions are ancient creatures! Fossil evidence reveals that if you traveled back in time 300 million years, you’d encounter scorpions strikingly similar to their modern-day descendants.

Survivors Against the Odds
In the wild, scorpions demonstrate remarkable resilience. These arthropods have thrived on land for over 400 million years.

  • A scorpion can survive a full year without food as long as it has access to water.
  • Thanks to their book lungs, they can stay submerged in water for up to two full days and still survive.
  • They are so efficient that they can live solely on the moisture from their food and have an extremely low metabolic rate, requiring only a quarter of the oxygen most insects need.

These traits have earned scorpions the reputation of being virtually indestructible.

Family Connections and Venomous Legends
Scorpions are believed to be most closely related to harvestmen, also known as daddy long legs.

Oh, and watch out for the Deathstalker Scorpion—it holds the title of the most venomous scorpion in the world!
