Get in shape in 2025 with ‘small and consistent’ steps

Learning a new exercise routine or trying to get in better shape in the New Year is never easy.

Lethbridge YMCA Health, Sport and Fitness Manager Zac Neufeld says consistency is your friend when starting out with any new exercise routine. “Find an exercise that works for you. Whether that’s running, pickleball or walking. Whatever you’re capable of and enjoy doing.”

And starting off small, Neufeld adds. “Small and consistent and slowly building on that, as you go along throughout the New Year.”

When taking the first step in any new exercise routine, Neufeld notes, relying on or finding your community that shares the same goals is going to go a long way in building consistency. “Everyone’s going through the same hurdles as you are. It makes it a lot easier to hold each other accountable and continue on with your New Year’s goals.”

“Somebody to build that connection with. Connections are important when it comes to completing one’s goals,” says Neufeld.

If you’re looking to create a new diet plan or eat better, Neufeld says not to take anything away at first. “I’d look to add things, as opposed to taking away. Maybe you eat fast food a couple of times a week, instead of taking that away, maybe add in the healthy stuff like more vegetables and whole foods. Slowly over time you might find you don’t even crave that stuff anymore because the other stuff makes you feel better.”

“Or you just don’t have room. You physically can’t eat anymore because you filled up with all the good stuff.”

According to Neufeld, the Lethbridge YMCA offers plenty of classes for those starting out or those looking to get back into exercising. “All our classes are free with membership. There’s a class for everybody.”

“We have personal training, as well,” says Neufeld. “With personal training, they’re there to speed up your goals, as opposed to doing it on your own. You almost build a relationship with your personal trainer, build that community and build that support system. They’ll help keep you accountable.”
