Local wrestlers face stiff competition at Golden Bear Invitational

Local wrestlers hit the mat in Edmonton over the weekend.

The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns team participated in the 2025 Golden Bear Invitational on Friday, January 10, hosted by the University of Alberta.

The men’s team placed fourth overall in the tournament, with the women in fifth.

“We continue to take position and points away from the teams that have been established in the province for 20 or more years,” says head coach Shawn Daye-Finley.

He notes this is only the second year for the Pronghorns team, “and I couldn’t be prouder of the athletes and their accomplishments to date”.

“It won’t be long before they will be dominating the podium as a team,” the coach adds.

Below are how the local athletes fared at the event:

  • Brydget Dearling (women’s – 83 kg): silver
  • Payton Shields (women’s – 62 kg): sixth
  • Danya Braun (women’s – 65 kg): fifth
  • Nadia Greaves (women’s – 76 kg): fifth
  • Michael Thomas (men’s – 76 kg): fourth
  • Colton Boxwell (men’s – 82 kg): fifth
