CAN-do spirit on display as part of an annual fundraiser for local food banks

From now until the beginning of April structures built out of canned goods supporting Lethbridge foodbanks will be on display at the Centre Village Mall.

Chairman of CANstruction YQL Daryl Schalk says the event has been held every year in Lethbridge, outside of the pandemic, since it started being held in Lethbridge in 2011.

“The whole goal is really to kind of create unique artistic structures out of cans,” Schalk says. “Then all the proceeds, all the cans and everything that’s used to build the event and any donations we get, everything goes straight to the food banks.”

This year there are seven teams taking part in the fundraising competition, including teams from Chinook High School, Lethbridge Polytechnic and the University of Lethbridge.

Schalk says every year the goal is to be bigger and better than the previous one, with the goal this year is exceed the 2024 event that brought in around $36,000 including 10,000 cans. He says after everything is taken down at the beginning of April will be sent to the local to the Interfaith Food Bank, Lethbridge Food Bank along with the foodbanks at the University and Polytechnic.

He adds the hope is people will come and check out the different structures the teams built and even consider voting for their favourite.

“With the non-perishable food donation, you can make a vote and vote for your People’s Choice Award.”

He says all the votes will be tallied up at the end of the month and there will be an event to announce the winners. The can structures will be on display until April 3rd.
