Lethbridge wrestlers perform well at provincial qualifying event

Local wrestlers fared well at a recent competition in Red Deer. 

The ASAA Rural Wrestling Provincial Championships were hosted at Notre Dame High School on March 1. 

The event served as a qualifier for the ASAA Wrestling Provincial Championships in Calgary, happening March 14 and 15 at Crescent Heights High School. Wrestlers had to place in the top five of their weight class to qualify for the upcoming Calgary competition.

In Red Deer, both the LCI boys & girls wrestling teams repeated as the 4A Rural Wrestling Provincial Team Champions.

Below is a list of the placings from the event: 

  • Paiden Fidler – Chinook High School 53kg: Gold 
  • Sydney Campbell – LCI 65kg: Bronze  
  • Sydney Shields – LCI 75kg: Gold  
  • Grady Steed – LCI 56kg: 5th  
  • Keanan Reynolds – Catholic Central High School 62kg: Silver 
  • Sterling Lowry – LCI 65kg: 6th 
  • Andrew Iwaasa – CCHS 68kg: Bronze 
  • Christien Lowry – LCI 68kg: Silver 
  • Jack Huggins – LCI 72kg: 4th 
  • Thomas Ellis-Toddington – LCI 76kg: Gold 

“What a great weekend. Our kids have been working hard, and it paid off,” says Lethbridge coach Pat Selk. “We’ve got great leaders on our team, leading through diligence and hard work. Our younger wrestlers see this and push even more, and this makes coaching more enjoyable. [I’m] excited for the future of Lethbridge wrestling for sure.”
