Seasonal road bans take effect in Lethbridge County

Lethbridge County is sending a notice out to heavy vehicle and equipment operators that seasonal road bans are in effect as of today.

The bans are put in place every spring to help keep road infrastructure in top shape as Mother Nature delivers warmer conditions.

As of Wednesday, March 12, most hard top roads will be banned to 75 per cent loads, with some exceptions at 50 per cent and 90 per cent, as defined in the Alberta Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation. All gravel roads in the county will stay at 100 per cent. Crews will monitor road conditions throughout the spring season.

Officials note heavy truck traffic places a high demand on roadways, which are more prone to damage this time of year because of the frost thaw.

“This damage is expensive to repair and placing bans on vulnerable roads helps keep maintenance costs down,” the County states.

A full list of the banned roads is available at the Lethbridge County website. Additionally, Alberta Transportation manages provincial highways and issues bans on those roads. More details on those prohibitions are available at the Alberta Government website.
