The reported vandalism of federal election campaign signs has prompted an advisory from police and the RCMP.
The Coaldale RCMP says several signs were vandalized and stolen around the town over the weekend. Police are now asking for help to identify suspects.
The RCMP says the alleged vandalism occurred Saturday night into early Sunday.
The mayor of Coaldale, Jack Van Rijn, issued a response to the vandalism just outside his town.
“No matter which candidate you support in the upcoming federal election, it’s vital to remember that each sign represents a legitimate choice and voice in our democracy,” he states.
Van Rijn condemned the behaviour, saying it “does not align with the values we cherish in Coaldale”. The mayor adds, “Our community stands on the pillars of respect, understanding, and mutual support.”
The mayor’s full statement can be seen below.
Meanwhile, the Lethbridge Police Service issued a statement to My Lethbridge Now, regarding the tampering of election campaign signs.
“Willfully damaging campaign signs is a criminal offence, and offenders could face mischief charges,” the LPS says.
