General voting day in the 2025 federal election is set for April 28, and you might be wondering where and how you can vote, and what you need when you head to the polls.
Voter information cards have been mailed out, which display where you can cast a ballot within your electoral district.
You can also visit the Elections Canada website, type in your postal code and that will bring up your voting locations.
Anyone looking to vote in the federal election must be registered to do so, must be a Canadian citizen who is at least 18-years-old on voting day, and must be able to prove their identity and address. When you vote, make sure to bring your government-issued ID.
ADVANCE & EARLY VOTING
If you cannot head to the polls on April 28, there are advance voting options.
Advance voting stations are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 18 to 21.
Additionally, you can vote early at an Elections Canada office by 6 p.m. on April 22. However, if you vote early this way you will have to do so using a special ballot.
The special ballot process can also be used if you would like to vote by mail. To vote by mail, you have to apply online with a deadline set at 6 p.m. on April 22.
On general voting day, polls will be open for 12 hours, with times varying based on what time zone you are in. Poll times are available online.
Voting is available for anyone who is incarcerated, or homeless.

In today’s world of social media, many might be tempted to post a selfie with their ballot. However, Elections Canada says that is illegal because it violates the secrecy of the vote under the Canada Elections Act. Additionally, it is a violation of the Act to publish a photo of a complete ballot in any way, including on social media.
