Months-long construction project starts on Highway 3 Thursday

A big construction project starts on Highway 3 tonight.

Nighttime work will be ongoing in Lethbridge from Thursday, April 17 to Thursday, July 31. Drivers might notice signage saying work is on until July 15. However, 511 Alberta lists the work as having an anticipated completion date of July 31.

The project will see paving improvements, sign upgrades and more along the stretch of Highway 3, just east of Highway 25 (which is University Drive south of Highway 3) to east of 43 Street and will include the intersection at 43 Street South.

Ledcor Highways is leading the provincial project on behalf of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors. Signs will be in place letting drivers know about the work.

Officials say night work will happen between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., and will include:

  • Milling, paving, concrete work, signage and signal upgrades
  • Grooved pavement and temporary markings
  • Lane, ramp and turn-lane closures
  • Reduces speed zones

During the daytime hours, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., officials say ramps will be open and two lanes in each direction will “usually” be available.

Drivers are asked to keep a safe distance from all construction workers and equipment, slow down and follow all posted directions.
