Downtown Lethbridge Book Crawl celebrates independent bookstores

A good read is never hard to find in Lethbridge, as local independent bookstores have a variety of books to please every type of bookworm.

This Saturday, it’s Canadian Independent Bookstore Day featuring the Downtown Lethbridge Book Crawl with Analog Books, Echo Used Books and Big John’s Books from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Co-owner of Analog Books Penny Warris says the annual coast-to-coast independent bookstore day is for readers, writers, illustrators and the like that come together to celebrate indie bookstores across the country. “It’s a time we can advocate for independent businesses.”

There’s a lot planned to get people to come downtown this weekend to shop locally, Warris notes.

“If people go to all three bookstores and get their passport stamped, they’ll get a special limited edition wooden bookmark,” adds Warris. “This is our fifth year of doing this.”

According to Warris, the annual event is Analog’s busiest day. “It’s the most amount of transactions we put through for any day of the year.”

Warris believes independent bookstores are involved in their communities. “We create a lot of community, and we support a lot of community. Because of that, people like to support us. They might not buy a book, but they like to come and visit.”

“It’s a really feel-good day.”

Analog Books will also have a prize wheel with a lot of local businesses offering prizes.

“They can only redeem their prizes that day. We anticipate all the stores on 5 Street, 6 Street and 7 Street will also be busy that day,” says Warris.
