U of L Pronghorn to represent Canada at competition in Germany

A local athlete is headed to Germany.

Lauchlan Irish, a member of the University of Lethbridge track and field program, has been named to Team Canada’s athletics roster for the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games. The international event is set to run July 21 to 27 in Bochum, Germany, and is part of the larger Rhine-Ruhr 2025 competition.

The triple jump specialist from Victoria, B.C. will be among 49 other Canadian athletes selected by U SPORTS to represent the country.

“Being selected to represent Canada at the FISU Games is a huge honour and a dream come true,” says Irish.

“It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to reach this point, but I couldn’t have done it alone – my coaches have put in just as much effort alongside me. This achievement is truly the result of our collective teamwork.

Irish adds that his experience with the U of L Pronghorns has been “essential” in getting to this point in his athletic career.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the guidance and support from Larry Steinke, Aaron Hernandez and Jamie Thomas. Each of them has played a key role in helping me develop both as an athlete and as a person,” he says.

“Their coaching, encouragement and belief in me have meant a great deal.”

The Pronghorn athlete says he is excited to test himself against “some of the best athletes in the world”.

“Representing Canada will be an unforgettable experience and I’m incredibly excited to have been selected,” Irish states.

The FISU Summer World University Games features student-athletes from around the world. Canada has captured 83 medals in athletics alone at the event since its first appearance in 1965. The team has won 10 gold, 40 silver and 33 bronze medals.

Canada’s roster is available at the U SPORTS website.
