“Was piled two feet deep”: Cardston hammered by huge hail storm Monday

CARDSTON, AB – It looked like the middle of winter for a period Monday night  in Cardston.

The town was hammered by a huge hail storm as a large storm cell rolled through the area. Pictures posted to social media showed hail piled up like snow in Cardston’s downtown core.

Lanark Duce, the Town’s Public Work’s Foreman , says he’s never seen anything like it.

“It would accumulate anywhere where the water was running,” said Duce. “It would bring all this hail and then it would pool. When the water subsided it just left just big drifts of hail. People were getting stuck in it. Right in the middle of main street we had drifts at least two feet deep.”

Environment Canada radar showed the storm moving across that portion of southwest Alberta around 8:00 pm Monday and severe thunderstorm warnings had been issued prior to that.

Duce says there was so much water with this storm and the large amount of hail resulted in the storm drains in the town being unable to take all that and water end up backing up and flooding some stores and basements.
